I completed my Doctor of Education from McGill University in 1990 in Educational Psychology and Counselling with a year of Family Therapy courses in the Faculty of Social Work. My doctoral research focused on adult attachment issues in people with difficulties sustaining intimate, committed relationships.
I worked in addictions from 1978 to 1983 (detox, outpatient counselling and residential treatment with the Department of National Defense). From 1983 to 1986, I provided individual, couples, family and group psychotherapy for adults, and children and youth in community mental health centres. From 1990 to 1992, after completing my doctorate, I was the Child and Youth Coordinator for North Shore Community Mental Health Centre in North Vancouver, BC. From 1992 to 2000, I worked for Wilson Banwell & Associates providing solution focused therapy to individuals, couples and families. In addition to this, I was the Eating Disorders Psychologist at North Shore Mental Health Centre from 1997 to 2004. From 2004 to 2014, I worked on a brief-stay psychiatric unit at Vancouver General Hospital providing psychological assessments to the team when there were questions of differential diagnosis. I also have extensive experience working with First Nations people. I have been in private practice since 1992.
